Review: Getting Any?

Released: Nov 19, 2002
By: Takeshi Kitano
Synopsis: From the acclaimed director Takeshi Kitano is a story about the average middle aged Asao, a professional do-nothing, whose only goal in life is to get laid. He embarks on a series of adventures in search of fulfilling his ultimate fantasy which is wild sex with a woman. His quest leads him into many hilarious situations from selling his grandfather's internal organs, robbing a bank, joining the yakuza and even becoming an actor in a Zatoichi movie (and one was later directed and released by Kitano).

Getting Any? Is a wile slapstick comedy adventure through the antics of Asao, and has all the sense of Kitano’s standup work. The movie is also a satire on Japanese culture, and unfortunately did not do so well in the box office.

Film Review: Getting Any? Is a sexual comedy through and through. The main character, Asao, just wants to get laid. His first dream is to get laid in a car, and from there his adventures escalate as he first tries to get a car, and then the ensuing comedic consequences.

I found Asao’s entire adventure to be hilarious. The situations he was in, and just the way that the entire movie was presented, made it very funny, and very entertaining.

The ending, however, might be strange to some American audiences. I won’t give anything away, but it was a parody on a movie made in America. That is probably the only thing that got the movie a 4/5. I had to ask myself, "What? Why?" And even say, "That is pretty gross!" But, some might find it hilarious.

Overall, it is a very hilarious movie and definitely worth the time to check it out.
